The Fruchthof illustrates Bremen's important role in the history of German tropical-fruit imports. The cultivation of and trade in these took place under colonial conditions and not in a vacuum. The relief on the exterior façade shows stylised people (of colour) loading fruit onto a ship. These ships also brought the fruit from the colonies to Bremen. The fruit-trading company of 60 Bremen merchants that had its seat here, and the Atlanta trading group of the merchant Gustav Scopio, are the key names to mention here. Atlanta's successor company, the Greenyard Foods corporate group, is to this day one of the world market leaders in the fruit trade.
