Vogelsangstraße is located in the Schwachhausen district. Vogelsangstraße was named after the merchant Heinrich Christian Friedrich Vogelsang. By a Senate resolution the street received the name Vogelsang on 4 November 1938. Heinrich Vogelsang was born on 17 March 1862 in Bremen and died on 23 May 1914 in Bremen. At the age of 16, Vogelsang moved to King William's Town in South Africa, where he completed a commercial apprenticeship. After his return from Africa, Vogelsang worked in his father's cigarette factory. In his father's firm, Vogelsang met the merchant Adolf Lüderitz. On behalf of Lüderitz, Vogelsang travelled to Africa in 1882 to acquire land there. This laid the foundation for the later colonial rule in German South West Africa. In 1886 Vogelsang was removed from his post and subsequently worked in his father's firm as a tobacco buyer. Together with his brother, Vogelsang took over his father's cigarette company in 1894. In 1903 Vogelsang took over the company as sole owner. After his death, his widow sold the cigarette company.
