Anti-Colonial Memorial / The Elephant

Nelson-Mandela-Park

To honour Germany's former colonies and the soldiers who died in them, the "Colonial Working Group Bremen" applied in 1926 to build an imperial colonial memorial. With the approval of the Bremen parliament, it was erected in 1931 to a design by the sculptor Fritz Behn. Until 1990 the elephant stood for Germany's colonial past and for demands to reclaim the colonies. In 1990 it was rededicated as an anti-colonial monument — a memorial against colonialism and for the independence of Namibia.
